The basics

What is two-way SMS?

Two-way SMS — also called conversational SMS — lets customers reply to your text messages and lets you respond back, turning a one-directional alert into a real conversation. Instead of blasting a message and hoping it lands, you give recipients a number or keyword they can text, and every inbound reply is captured, routed and answered.

One-way SMS flows in a single direction: you send an OTP, alert or offer and the customer cannot reply meaningfully. Two-way SMS opens the return path — replies route to a unified inbox, your email or a webhook/API in real time, so you can automate answers, capture leads, run surveys and manage opt-ins. Incoming messages are free, and you keep a rolling 90-day history of the whole thread.

Two-way SMS API & webhooks

When a customer replies, we POST a JSON payload to your webhook URL in real time — originator, message, destination, timestamp, network and a unique message ID. Match a keyword and fire an automatic reply, or hand the thread to an agent.

Inbound webhook payload

// POST to your webhook when a reply arrives { "messageId": "in_9f2a71c4e8", "originator": "+919812345678", "destination": "575758", "message": "GOLD", "network": "Airtel", "timestamp": "2026-08-14T10:22:05+05:30" }

Keyword-match auto-reply

// Your endpoint responds with an outbound SMS if (payload.message.trim().toUpperCase() === "GOLD") { return { "to": payload.originator, "from": payload.destination, "text": "Thanks! You are subscribed to GOLD. Reply STOP to opt out." }; }

Full REST endpoints, delivery reports and inbound forwarding are documented for your team — request API access.

Voting & polls

Run live SMS votes and tally keyword replies in real time.

India & global compliance

Compliance — DLT/TRAI (India) & opt-out (global)

Inbound replies to your own number don’t need DLT, but any outbound A2P SMS you send in India — the message that invites a reply, plus auto-responses — must run over DLT-registered routes under TRAI’s TCCCPR rules.

1. DLT for outbound

Register your entity, sender header and templates for the outbound leg. We assist end to end.

2. Consent & opt-in

Capture opt-in via keyword (e.g. JOIN) and log it as proof of consent.

3. STOP / opt-out

Honour STOP globally — auto-unsubscribe removes the contact from future sends.

4. Local rules abroad

DLT doesn’t apply overseas, but follow each country’s opt-in and anti-spam laws.

We handle the India side for you — see DLT registration & support.

Answers

Two-way SMS FAQs

What is two-way SMS?
Two-way SMS (conversational SMS) lets customers reply to your messages and lets you respond, turning texts into real conversations. Replies route to a unified inbox, email or webhook, where auto-responders or agents can answer.
What is the difference between one-way and two-way SMS?
One-way SMS flows in a single direction — you send an OTP, alert or offer and the recipient can’t reply. Two-way SMS opens a return path so recipients can text back and you can respond, automate replies and capture data.
Long code vs short code — which should I use?
Long codes are standard 10-digit numbers, cost less and suit 1:1 conversations like support and lead capture. Short codes are 5–6 digits, easy to advertise and handle high throughput for campaigns, voting and mass keyword opt-ins. Both support two-way.
What is the difference between a shared and dedicated number?
A shared number/keyword is pooled with other users and identified by your keyword — fast and low-cost, live in about a working day. A dedicated number is yours alone, giving full control of all keywords and traffic, and takes a few days to provision.
How do SMS keywords work?
A keyword is a word customers text to your number (e.g. JOIN, HELP or GOLD) to trigger a specific action or auto-reply. Sub-keywords let one number run many flows, such as PLAN GOLD or PLAN SILVER.
What is an auto-responder?
An auto-responder is a rule that matches an inbound keyword and sends an automatic reply instantly, 24×7, with no agent needed — for example confirming an opt-in or returning info on request.
How do I receive incoming replies?
Inbound replies can arrive three ways: in your unified web inbox, forwarded to your email, or POSTed in real time to your webhook/API for your CRM or app to process.
Do you support webhooks/API for inbound messages?
Yes. When a reply arrives we POST a JSON payload — originator, message, destination, timestamp, network and message ID — to your webhook URL, and you can respond with a keyword-matched auto-reply via our REST API.
Is incoming SMS free?
Yes. Receiving inbound messages on your two-way number is completely free — you only pay for outbound SMS you send.
How do opt-in and opt-out work?
Customers opt in by texting a keyword such as JOIN, and opt out by texting STOP, which auto-unsubscribes them from future sends. START can re-subscribe them. All consent is logged.
Do I need DLT for two-way SMS in India?
Receiving replies doesn’t require DLT, but any outbound A2P SMS you send in India — the message inviting a reply plus auto-responses — must use DLT-registered routes under TRAI’s TCCCPR. We assist with the full onboarding.
How fast can two-way SMS be set up?
Shared long codes and keywords activate in about one working day. Dedicated long codes take a few days, and short codes typically take a few weeks to provision.
